About Us

We started out as independent crafts people and timber workers who came together organically; initially teaming up to work on specific projects, before finally incorporating.

Today we are proud to be a workers co-operative, which means that our business is collectively owned and operated by our members.

We have a non-hierarchical, equal pay structure and practice consensus decision making.

Our
Team

We are a collective of woodland & woodworking enthusiasts with many years’ experience in sawmilling and timber processing, as well as experience in the commercial forestry sector.

We also hold between us a range of professional qualifications which allow us to safely work with plant and machinery, build and maintain equipment and grade our timber.

We also proudly claim a range of less relevant experience in fields as diverse as engineering & toolmaking, kitchen fitting, ecological building, renewable energy, Earth sciences and forestry, which whilst not always directly relevant, we like to think makes us more rounded human beings!

Our Ethos & Philosophy

Our Ethos & Philosophy

Setting up a co-operative is a philosophical and political statement. In so doing we have set out our stall as a social enterprise; radically diverging from the prevailing profit motive in search of something truer, more fulfilling, more authentic.

Sustainability

Working with a natural material, like timber, is a continual reminder to think of the environment from which it came. We are acutely aware of the pressures on local and global forests to be productive to our demands and this awareness has led us to make informed choices about the timber we source and products we produce.

Our Approach to Timber & Building

The Timber Co-operative is, at its core, a green building enterprise. Producing and supplying materials for ethical, affordable and locally sourced structures is the essence of our work.

Our Relationships

No-one (nor co-op) is an island. So in this section of our “about us”, we’d like to take the time to acknowledge the others around us that make it possible to do what we do.
